More on blues/boogie in my book: bit.ly Piano improv: boogie-woogie / blues piano choruses, in E, with some advice for learners. This starts off with a slow improvised blues approach, before changing to use a boogie-woogie bass with runs and riffs (licks) in the right hand. By the way, the progression is a standard 12-bar in E. However, instead of playing B7 – A – E at the end of each chorus, I’m playing Bm7 – Am7 (and sometimes Am9) – E. Stuff to watch out for here include the way I’m playing blues licks in quite a percussive way on the keyboard, the contrast between soft and loud phrases, and glissando (slide) technique. It’s worth looking at the latter pretty closely, because if you execute a clumsy slide during a fast boogie-woogie, it’ll really hurt your fingers! If you’re interested in more blues and boogie-woogie piano tips and tricks, be sure to check out my channel – and my book, How To Really Play The Piano.
